Course Description

The use of words as symbols for ideas is a gift given from our Lord to Adam. It is a gift that differentiates us from every other creature on the planet and connects us to each other in a meaningful way. Our communication relies on words and using them properly, and so we must learn to use them properly!

The first step to using words properly is determining their part of speech. Parts of speech determine what role words play within the sentence. Just as a community, business, or family functions best when everyone knows their role, a sentence functions best when words play their correct parts!

Each week, in a live class, the instructor will teach 2 different parts of speech and the correct usage of each (relationship to each other, position in a sentence, and appropriate punctuation). For homework, students will complete worksheets covering the material learned in class.

Learning Objectives

In this course, students will learn:

  • The eight parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.
  • How to identify parts of speech within a sentence.
  • Their uses and placement within sentences.
  • How to make their sentences more complex, vivid, and detailed using the different parts of speech.

At the end of the course, students will be awarded a “pass,” “pass with merit,” or “pass with distinction.”
